Bieres de la Meuse, Poster
translation: Beer of the Meuse
Subject: Personal Project
This is a beautiful reproduction of vintage French liquor advertising art nouveau poster for beer in France, which was done by Alphonse Mucha, 1890.
It features a gorgeous French girl with some appropriate beer ingredients, including barley stalks and green hops, and large field poppy flowers indigenous to north-eastern France tucking into her long swirling locks of hair. She looks at the viewer with an almost hypnotic and alluring gaze caught between the world of the viewer and the world of the painting. The girl presents a radiance and delightfulness along with the hint of a concealed message, expresses a special and joyous intuition and warmth in this image.
The design that surrounds the girl looks more like a frame that made the girl and the words to be the dominance, in this art nouveau poster. Although the words are in an organic design, they are big, obvious, clear thus, still legible. The white background of the words had made the contrast even more obvious, making the characters more attractive. The other dominant subject in this poster which is the gorgeous French girl was put in the middle of the poster, making it an eye-catching viewpoint. A dynamic layout is used in this image. The girl, who looks at the viewer with an alluring gaze, is likely to seduce the viewers in her following actions, by having another sip of the beer that she is holding in her hands. Her leaning pose of putting her hands on her lips at the corner of her face has created more tension to the image.
The long-dressed beauty who holds a mug while surrounded by green hops and barley stalks, in the poster, had enticed male attention by featuring images of attractive female drinkers. Although men remained the primary consumers of alcohol, such poster images ultimately helped create the conditions for more and more women to drink freely in public spaces.
This is perhaps the most beautiful beer poster ever created, demonstrating, once again, the unmistakeable genius of Alphonse Mucha. I like it very much, as how Mucha had done this with his own style, Le style Mucha – Mucha’s characteristic designs featuring a beauty, semi-circular and circular motifs, and artfully meandering hair.
